Why vertical development beats yet another workshop on the frontline.

12 June 2025 By Campbell McGlynn

Most leadership programs assume the bottleneck is skill. In our experience working with 80+ frontline leaders, the real bottleneck is the underlying operating system: how a leader sees, decides and responds when pressure spikes.

Vertical development targets the operating system, not the script. The skills layer remains, but it's no longer the gate.

Three things change when vertical work lands: (1) leaders see patterns they previously missed; (2) they tolerate ambiguity longer before defaulting; (3) they can hold competing demands without flipping into rescue or blame.
